Certification for Advanced Life Support (ALS) Ambulance Suppliers
Attention KS, NE, and WMO ambulance providers
Ambulance suppliers are classified as either Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) suppliers for purposes of billing services to Medicare. Ambulance suppliers must provide the following information to establish certification requirements and most of you provided this to the prior Medicare carrier:
- A description of the vehicle(s), including safety and other patient care items onboard
- Evidence that each crewmember has training in the standard and advanced Red Cross first aid courses or the equivalent (e.g. copies of certification)
- Copies of all pertinent state and local licenses or permits related to the vehicle(s), crew, equipment and operation.
NOTE: To be eligible to receive reimbursement for medically necessary ALS level services, an ambulance supplier must be enrolled with the Medicare program as an ALS certified supplier. If an ambulance supplier is certified and enrolled with Medicare as a BLS only supplier, they cannot receive reimbursement for ALS level services.
IMPORTANT: Due to the information in your provider enrollment records from the prior carrier, you may have started to see denials for this reason. To correct your records, Provider Enrollment is prepared to receive a copy of your ambulance license certification by fax and quickly correct your records. The fax number is 608-301-2740. Please use a cover sheet and supply them with your, contact information, PTAN and NPI number.
Once your records are updated, you may resubmit your claims.
Provider Enrollment may contact you to complete a new 855B application if it is found you have not done so recently. Please contact the Provider Enrollment Hotline at 866-503-7664, if you have further questions.
