CPT Behavioral Health Code Changes

Effective January 1, 2013, the Psychiatry section of the CPT manual published by the American Medical Association (AMA) was revised. A number of frequently used behavioral health codes were deleted. New codes were added and must be used for billing and documentation for all carriers. Claims received for dates of service on or after January 1, 2013 with any of these deleted codes will be rejected. A grace period for the use of deleted codes is not applicable.

Summary of Changes:

  • Two new codes for psychiatric diagnostic evaluation
  • Total changes of all the psychotherapy codes
  • New add-on code(s) for interactive complexity
  • New crisis psychotherapy codes
  • Deletion of the medication management code 90862
  • Add-on code, 90863
    This new code is to be used by providers for pharmacologic management when preformed with psychotherapy or with an appropriate evaluation and management codes.
